Dhaka witnessed an intense burst of innovation, debate, and ambition this January as more than 160 young innovators, industry leaders, academics, and policymakers gathered for the two-day MillionX Launch Weekend. Held across January 16 and 17, the event marked one of Bangladesh's most coordinated efforts yet to position artificial intelligence as a driver of national development rather than a distant technological trend.
The weekend unfolded in two closely linked phases. The first day centered on youth-led innovation through a competitive Build-A-Thon, while the second day elevated the discussion to a national level at the Genesis AI Conference, where prominent voices from industry, academia, and the diaspora debated how Bangladesh can realistically harness AI for economic and social transformation.
From Coding Floors to National Conversations
Day one was defined by action. Fifty-three teams comprising 163 students from universities across the country took part in the MillionX Build-A-Thon, presenting AI-powered solutions across five priority sectors: education, agriculture, healthcare, e-commerce, and financial technology.
The opening keynote was delivered by Munir Hasan, President of the Bangladesh Open Source Network, who urged young participants to see AI not just as a tool, but as a responsibility. Entrepreneur and former EVRCOOL CEO Anis Rahman followed with a candid motivational address, urging participants to embrace failure as part of growth.
After multiple rounds of judging, five teams were declared winners. One of the most talked-about moments came from the participation of Sabiha Akter Nib, a school-level student who competed alongside university teams and later emerged as part of a winning group.
A Bigger Question: What Comes After Talent?
The Genesis AI Conference on day two took that momentum and posed a harder question: if Bangladesh has talent, what systems are needed to sustain and scale it? The conference brought together figures such as Mohammad Mahdee-uz Zaman, Vice President of Cybage Software, Malik Mohammed Sayeed, CEO of Square Toiletries, Asif Saleh, Executive Director of BRAC, and Dr. Arif Dowla, Managing Director of ACI.
From Talk to Timelines
One of the most significant outcomes of the conference was the introduction of a Bangladesh AI Action Charter, outlined by Dr. Zunaid Kazi, CEO of Knowtomation. The charter proposed a clear 30-, 60-, and 90-day roadmap aimed at moving from policy discussions to pilot execution and demonstrable national AI projects.
A Signal, Not a Finale
Rather than presenting a finished solution, the MillionX Launch Weekend sent a clear signal. Bangladesh's AI future is no longer hypothetical. The challenge now lies in execution, accountability, and whether the momentum generated over these two days can be sustained beyond conference halls and competition stages.
